Kiplinger Personal Finance, a national financial publication, has named Sherman, Texas as the best place to retire in Texas. Citing the city’s low cost of living, Kiplinger lauded the Northeast Texas city with over 40,000 population as the “great place to retire” in the Lone Start State.
The publication pointed out that Sherman offers a robust social scene that includes boutique shopping, a number of annual festivals and free “Shakespeare in the Grove” performances. The 12,000 acre Hageman National Wildlife Reserve also is a draw for retirees who have a love of nature. Nearby Lake Texoma offers fishing, boating, camping and other outdoor adventures. And, the Dallas-Ft. Worth Metroplex is just an hour’s drive away.
The city has a reputation has being the home to a number of major health care facilities, offering the most sophisticated and advanced care available.
Sherman is also home to Austin College, a private Presbyterian four year school with a national reputation of excellence. Grayson County College, located in neighboring Denison, has a branch campus in Sherman.
Sherman is the base to a number of radio and television stations, making it an independent media area.
Kiplinger pointed out that the cost of living is 13 percent below the national average and housing is 25 percent below national rates. The lack of a state income tax is a draw for out-of-state retirees.
According to Sherman Mayor David Plyler, “Sherman has worked to keep taxes low, housing affordable and local culture top notch.” Plyler went on to say, “we have quietly built Sherman into a strong and welcoming community for retirees, young families and everyone in between.”
