If you are looking for a leader in streamlined rail service, look no further than Houston, Texas. This booming Texas city is known throughout the world for its ultra-modern rail system that is designed to keep the Houston metro area on the move. And for visitors there is no better way to explore Houston than by its famed METRORail. This highly efficient rail system takes the stress out of touring the many sites of Houston by offering an expanded rail system that provides service along 23 miles of central Houston.
METRORail operates 66 rail cars, with another 10 either in testing or pending delivery. The system consists of three lines: the Red Line (North), the Green Line (East End) and the Purple Line (Southeast). The three combined lines make virtually every downtown tourist destination easily accessible and easy on the pocketbook. Major stops for the lines include the business district and Midtown, the Museum District, Herman Park Zoo, the Texas Medical Center, BBVA Stadium and the Theater District. Other destinations reached by METRORail include the University of Houston, the Convention District and many others. The system now carries over 30,000 passengers each day.
METRORail is committed to not only improving travel within the central city areas, but is also working to preserve the cultural integrity of the various communities making up Houston. The stations along the system are showcases for local and regional art, reflecting the rich diversity of the communities along the rail routes. The METRORail project has added over 17 miles of new walkways and 45 miles of 12 foot traffic lanes since the rail system launch in 2004. Over 900 new trees have been planted at the stations and along the routes.
Rail system hours are available for riders as early as 4:40 a.m. on weekdays and 5:30 a.m. on weekends. The system runs as late as 2:20 a.m. on Fridays and Saturdays. Tickets are just $1.25 one way. For a complete schedule and more information, go to www.gometrorail.org.
