One of the most encouraging developments in communities across the country has been the emergence of the Main Street Program. This unique concept has encouraged cities of all sizes to recreate and bring back to life downtown business districts that had previously experienced decline.
One of the showplaces of downtown revitalization is Bryan, Texas. Located just five miles from Texas A&M University, Downtown Bryan is a bustling center of local art, entertainment, commerce and residential living. At the center of this rebirth is the Downtown Bryan Association (DBA). The DBA is dedicated to preserving the historical aspects of Bryan while encouraging and supporting new economic opportunities. Today, the downtown area of Bryan is an eclectic blend of the charm of the past and the progressive outlook of the future. This vibrant area is a perfect place for a night out, a weekend away or even a great place to call home. And, business opportunities abound in the heart of this East Texas City.
Downtown Bryan is supported by an array of merchants, community leaders, business professionals and historical enthusiasts committed to preserving the rich history of this city and the area.
The downtown area traces its history back to the 1860’s, when the nephew of Stephen F. Austin, William Joel Bryan, sold a single track of land to railroad developers. Following the Civil War, Bryan became a significant business hub for the railroad lines, the cotton industry, agriculture and mercantile business. Attracted by the booming economic climate and rich farm lands, many Czechs, Germans and Italian immigrants settled in area during the 1880’s. The creation of the Agriculture and Mechanical College (Texas A&M) in 1876 made the Bryan area a leader in education opportunities.
Bryan continued to grow throughout the decades, but with the emergence of outlying shopping and new malls by the early 1960’s, the downtown area began a slow decline. In the late 1980’s, a movement began to revitalize the downtown area with the goal of bringing back business and social life for the good of the community. That goal was soon realized, and with the help of DBA, Downtown Bryan is a testament to the commitment of the people of Bryan to preserve the richness of their past while looking to the future.
